ARC Review of Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong

Goodreads Summary:
In the Forest of the Dead, where the empire’s worst criminals are exiled, twin sisters Moria and Ashyn are charged with a dangerous task. For they are the Keeper and the Seeker, and each year they must quiet the enraged souls of the damned.

Only this year, the souls will not be quieted.

Ambushed and separated by an ancient evil, the sisters’ journey to find each other sends them far from the only home they’ve ever known. Accompanied by a stubborn imperial guard and a dashing condemned thief, the girls cross a once-empty wasteland, now filled with reawakened monsters of legend, as they travel to warn the emperor. But a terrible secret awaits them at court—one that will alter the balance of their world forever.

My Review:
Sea of Shadows is a crazy ride. Moria and Ashyn are twins. This is a very rare thing. They are the Keeper and Seeker of the forest. Every year the criminals are sent into the forest. They are sent their to pretty much die. No one comes back. The Seeker (Ashyn) is then sent in with a party of people to release the soles of those who died to make sure their spirits don't retaliate on the city. Which the Keeper (Moria) is charged to protect. Something is different this year. There are survivors and the spirits will not be silenced. Ashyn is in danger and Moria is worried. A search party is sent in. They run into angry spirits and creatures that are not suppose to exist. Will the sisters and their companions survive this? Will they be able to protect their loved ones or are they all destined to die?

The girls each have their relationships. Moria with Gavril and Ashyn with Ronan. There wasn't really a lot of time for romance though. There is a lot of carnage and death. They are literally on the run for their lives the whole time. I liked them but, didn't really feel any romantic pull towards one or the other. The boys did do a pretty good job keeping their girls safe. Still, not everyone makes it out alive. There are secrets being kept that will destroy them. Will they make it through this and rescue the children that were taken?

Sea of Shadows is a completely different story from anything I have read recently. It was a very interesting read with plenty of action after things started. I really enjoyed it and hope there will be another in this series!
