A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest

Goodreads Summary:
On the evening of Sofia Claremont's seventeenth birthday, she is sucked into a nightmare from which she cannot wake.

A quiet evening walk along a beach brings her face to face with a dangerous pale creature that craves much more than her blood.

She is kidnapped to an island where the sun is eternally forbidden to shine.
An island uncharted by any map and ruled by the most powerful vampire coven on the planet. She wakes here as a slave, a captive in chains.

Sofia's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn when she is the one selected out of hundreds of girls to join the harem of Derek Novak, the dark royal Prince.

Despite his addiction to power and obsessive thirst for her blood, Sofia soon realizes that the safest place on the island is within his quarters, and she must do all within her power to win him over if she is to survive even one more night.

Will she succeed? ...or is she destined to the same fate that all other girls have met at the hands of the Novaks?

My Review:
I finally read this one. I have seen it everywhere and it's finally time I read it. I for one an a huge vampire fan. So I was excited to see that this wasn't your average, vampires are nice to humans and don't like killing them. The vampires in this book have human slaves. So imagine Sofia's surprise to wake up in The Shade as a slave to one of the most powerful vampires ever, Derek. Derek however is also not your stereotypical vampire. He is trying to fight is nature as a killer. He was put under a witches spell to sleep and has finally woke up after 400 years. Things have changed and not for the better. The vampires of The Shade have allowed themselves to become weak and vulnerable. For Sofia she is constantly living in fear and wondering when she will be killed. How will she survive in this new world?

We get both Derek and Sofia's POV during this book. I loved that. We got to see what was going on in Sofia's mind after being ripped away from her family and the boy she loved. Being in this new place was not easy for her. Especially when she develops feelings for Derek. She fights them because he is dangerous and his family is too. She wants to fight it but, it is very hard. Derek is different. We get that from his portions of the book as well as through Sofia's eyes. He wants to be better. Of course we all slip up from time to time, it is only natural. These two have some serious angst between them.

Derek's family is not so easy to get along with though. His brother and sister are not the friendliest towards humans. They believe in the old ways where humans are slaves and alive to please them. Unfortunately when Derek shows such interest in Sofia it puts her in a dangerous position. She has to look out whenever shes around other vampires. I also really enjoyed the witch! I think there are some fun things ahead with her story line!

I really enjoyed this book. So much so that I purchased the second one immediately and am almost done with it. I plan to have that review up shortly as well!
